Brandenburg Gate or The Heart of Berlin

Brandenburg Gate is one of the best known monuments of Berlin. Positioned between Parizer Platz and Platz der March 18, the gate was built at the command of Wilhelm II as a symbol of peace. The project’s architect was Karl Gotthard von Longhans (works were conducted during 1788-1791), who used elements of classical architecture.

Enshrining the reputation of Berlin as Spreeathen (Athens on the Spree River), the gate was designed after Propylaea, the way of access to the Acropolis in Athens. It is composed of 12 Doric columns, supporting the Quadriga led by the goddess Viktoria (sculpture of Johann Gottfried Schadow).

Brandenburg Gate remained unchanged in its architecture and has played an important role in the modern history of Germany.
Brandenburg Gate is certainly the most important European modern symbol of peace, the triumphant entry of the goddess in the city signifying the end of all conflicts. It is also a symbol of division and reunification, a monument that saw the torches dragged under it by the Nazi Germany during the darkest period of history, but under which have passed, crying for joy, people separated by arbitrary decisions while more than 50 years.

While visiting the Brandenburg Gate you could also book a room at one of the best Berlin hotels.
